When is overtime due?

Non-exempt employees should receive time-and-a-half compensation for hours worked in excess of 40 per week.

What is the minimum wage in Rhode Island?

The Rhode Island minimum wage is $7.40 per hour, effective Jan. 1, 2007. Workers ages 14 and 15 can be paid 75% of the Rhode Island minimum wage, or$5.55 per hour, when working 24 hours or less. If a minor works more than 24 hours, they must be paid at least the minimum wage.

What is the minimum wage for tipped employees?

Tipped workers must be paid at least $2.89 per hour. This direct wage plus tips must equal at least the Rhode Island minimum wage.

Are employers required to keep time records for their employees?

Employers must keep accurate time records for all employees, including salaried workers. These records, along with payroll records, must be kept for a minimum of three years.

Are workers entitled to meal periods or rest breaks?

Employees working a six-hour shift must receive a 20-minute meal break; those working an eight-hour shift must receive a 30-minute meal period. Health care facilities or businesses employing less than three workers at one site during a shift are exempt from fulfilling this requirement.

Are workers entitled to paystubs?

On every pay period, employers must provide to each employee a paystub detailing hours worked, deductions and reasons for such deductions.

Can an employer make deductions for cash shortages?

Employers cannot deduct for cash shortages, uniforms, rent, damages or any other reason except for taxes. An employer can deduct for a loan or advance against future wages if an employee gives written authorization to do so.
