Vermont Minimum Wage Basics

Vermont Minimum Wage Law:

  • The minimum wage in Vermont is $8.06 per hour.
  • If the federal minimum wage exceeds the Vermont minimum wage, the state wage is automatically replaced with the federal rate.
  • Every Jan. 1, the Vermont minimum wage will be increased by 5% or a percentage of the city average, not seasonally adjusted.

Vermont Overtime Law

According to Vermont Overtime Law, employees should receive time-and-a-half compensation for hours performed in excess of 40 hours during a workweek. Vermont Overtime Law exempts certain workers from overtime pay, including those in retail, service, hotels recreation, hospitals or nursing homes. Employers that are not subject to Vermont overtime law may have to comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act if the employer is engaged in interstate commerce or makes more than $500,000 each year.

Vermont Wage and Hour Law: Last Paychecks

When an employee is discharged, they must be paid within 72 hours. When an employee quits, they must be paid by the next regular payday. If the employer has not established regular paydays, the employee must be paid on the following Friday.
